The National Cipher Challenge

Countdown: tick, tick, tick

The clock is ticking down to the end of round 1 at 9pm tonight, and we have had nearly 7,000 attempts across the two parts! Congratulation to those of you who have completed them, and our very best wishes to those of you still trying. Don’t give up!

Challenge 2 will be published at 3pm on Thursday 15th October and we hope you are all looking forward to it. Perhaps we will learn more about the adventures of Mademoiselle Bernhardt, and Eli, though with another 8 chapters after that I can’t guarantee that all will become clear yet.

Remember that although the first three challenges are important in terms of developing your skills and setting the scene, the competition starts with Challenge 4. You will still be able to download certificates for each of the first three rounds, and we will publish leaderboards for each round, but the scores won’t contribute to your position on the overall competition leaderboard, so you can relax a bit for now.

If you are really stuck then we hope Crackerjack’s post on Monday gave you some good ideas about how to handle that feeling. Next Monday we will publish the first part of a guide to programming for the cipher challenge, kindly written by another of our alumni, so don’t forget to keep checking the news,
