Just messaging here to gauge where everyone is at…
OUR TEAM HAS FOUND A PLAIN ENGLISH KEY (I WON’T SAY WHAT TO PREVENT CHEATING) SINCE THE FIRST DEADLINE BUT ITS PARTIAL!!!!
ITS FRUSTRATING – WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BACKTRACE AND SLEUTH WHERE THE GIVEN PAGE OF CASE FILE 8.2 CAME FROM, LEADING TO ANOTHER WEBSITE, WE BRUTEFORCED EVERY SINGLE WORD, OF PAGES WE BELIEVED WERE RELEVANT!!!!!!!!!!
WE HAD TO FIX IT BY HAND – BUT ITS NOT BEING ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE HAVE CHECKED THE INTERNET ARCHIVE LINK WITHIN CASE FILE 9.3, AND USED INFO GARNERED FROM SOLVING PREVIOUS CIPHERS (WON’T SAY IT HERE TO PREVENT CHEATING)
HILLCLIMBING GAVE ONLY A SLIGHTLY BETTER RESULT!!!!!!!!!!!
WE HAVE AUTOMATED EVERY. SINGLE. ANAGRAM OF THE KEY – EVERY SINGLE RESULT WAS WORSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE HAVE ALSO ATTEMPTED TO PAIR DIGRAPHS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
YAY NOW THE 2ND DEADLINE HAS PASSED!!!!!!!!!!!!
COLD HARD PYTHON BRUTEFORCE AND DEDUCTION ISN’T CUTTING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. As per another reply by Harry, if there are too many mistakes in your solution, the marker will default to 0%.

I tried doing it by hand and also looked at the different ciphers it could be after the first step but there’s not much progress so far. And I’m also trying not to worry about the deadline since if Challenge 10 is done properly there’s 360 points which makes the 30 points lost here seem like nothing in comparison

14th December 2025 at 4:44 pm #114427anatidaephobiaParticipantDoes anyone know if Case File 9.4 refers to Part 9A or 9B? And I realised that decoding and encoding with the key produces very different results – I tried doing one of them by hand but the other one seems impossible to do by hand without another cipher which I tried as well. But I may be missing something so I will look back over it and see if there’s anything new.

Hill climbing assumes the encryption process was standard, but as @hohohocch said, compare your output to what you’d expect the output to be. If this doesn’t make a lot of sense, then I’d suggest you take a step back and think about how the cipher encodes message in general, and what might be different about the encoding of this particular output. Can you find a pattern in the digraphs which might help explain why you’re only getting a partial solution?
And.. breathe
15th December 2025 at 7:15 am #114434BobDParticipantHave you considered your strategy for entries in the same row or column?
15th December 2025 at 12:00 pm #114435crInoHParticipantHad a similar problem where we ended up with a key that gave some words and some nonsense. We also had to fix it manually, and fix some of the substitutions.
If you did this, and have something legible that feels like it should be the answer but isn’t, I would recommend you double check every word and make sure there isn’t a possibility that one of the the letters could be substituted for another, and still make sense! That was our issue
