Case files 4.1
Are we stuck in 2024 ?See the earlier (or was/will it have been later?) reply to a comment about publication order of the forum posts, Harr
13th November 2025 at 9:32 pm #113390ThompsonJParticipantThere is a typo in the text for Case File 4.4:
the one that has the same pattern ODDOODIF is the name BABBAGE.
should read
the one that has the same pattern ODOODIF is the name BABBAGE.
(emphasis added to highlight location of error!)
Thank you, quite right! Have edited it for posterity. Harry
15th November 2025 at 11:23 am #113391ThompsonJParticipantThe ‘notification bubble’ (From: Harry – Subject: Please read me!) just under the main menu bar seems to cause issues with the drop-down menus – the first two or three entries in each drop-down no longer have an active link [e.g. in the ‘Resources’ drop-down, ‘BOSS Training Division’ and ‘Official BOSS Deciphering Tools’ no longer link to their respective pages.] This behaviour is present when viewing the site in (at least) Firefox and MS Edge browsers.
Supporting evidence that it is the ‘notification bubble’ causing these problems: ‘inspecting’ the page and setting
<div class="messages-prompt">(or<div class="messages-prompt-wrapper">to have styledisplay: nonerestores the links. Thanks for highlighting this, we are working on a fix! The web team really appreciate you taking the time to point this out, and asked me to tell you that. Harry
15th November 2025 at 11:24 am #113433upsidedownParticipantSince the dawn of time, when people post long ciphertexts without spaces on the forum they overflow the post box (example).
Assuming this is not desirable/intended, this could be fixed with a CSS rule like this:
div.bbp-reply-content { word-break: break-word; }Again, thanks for the suggestion. The team will take a look, Harry
18th November 2025 at 12:39 pm #113633F6EXB_the_frenchyParticipantCase file 5.2
Your time machine needs a penny to restart.
Thanks! Harry
20th November 2025 at 2:22 pm #113727Puzzling_PelicanParticipantThe “Quickest submission part A/B” badges seem not to be appearing this year. How much faster do I need to submit?
ThanksWill look into it, thanks for posting, Harry
20th November 2025 at 3:08 pm #113729Attempt_5ParticipantJust me or is the 6B ciphertext missing?
Just a temporary glitch, should be showing now. Let me know if it is not. Harry
20th November 2025 at 3:27 pm #113730Puzzling_PelicanParticipant6B is missing 🙁 it is just blank
Thanks for pointing this out. It is up now – we are investigating the issue but think it is fixed. Let me know if you have any problems. If you or anyone else submitted while the challenge was blank and got an erroneous 100% that will stop you from resubmitting, so please get in touch so we can rectify that and you can resubmit. (We think this only affected two teams, and are contacting them via the messaging system, but do let us know if you think you are affected and we missed you.) With my sincere apologies, Harry
20th November 2025 at 3:36 pm #113735AES_of_spadesParticipantIs challenge 6 part B SUPPOSED to read ‘You can try frequency analysis, and ultimately I think you will find it helpful, but at first it might not assist you much. You will know why if you have already broken part A, if not I suggest you do that first!’, or is that a bug?
Thanks for posting. It was a bug and is now a squished bug (I hope) others are posting that all is now well in the matrix. We are really sorry about the temporary glitch. If you submitted a speculative solution while there was no challenge text then you might have been awarded a score of 100 by a marking algorithm that was as confused as you were. Really sorry about that. We think only two competitors were caught by that and are contacting them via the messaging system so they know and can resubmit. Apologies, Harry
20th November 2025 at 3:36 pm #113733CribbageParticipant… all fixed now!
Thank you! Harry
20th November 2025 at 3:36 pm #113732Attempt_5ParticipantIt shows now thanks!
Thanks for letting us know! And apologies again, Harry
20th November 2025 at 3:36 pm #113731CribbageParticipantOk, this may be part of the challenge, but is the text for Part B missing (week 6)?
It was certainly a challenge for us, but not intended for you! We fixed this by 3.08. If you can still not see the challenge please clear your browser cache and try again. If you need to submit and can’t for any reason, then email us at [email protected] for help. Harry
20th November 2025 at 3:38 pm #113743ByteInBitsParticipant6B did not show for me for 20 minutes so 20 minutes late posting answer|
Not that it matters to me but I wonder how it has effect others?Apologies for that. It won’t make a difference to your score and we had fixed the bug by 3.08 so should not (and does not appear to have) affected many users. We are really sorry for the confusion though and grateful to you for your patience and for taking the time to let us know. Harry
20th November 2025 at 3:40 pm #113744AES_of_spadesParticipantSO was that weird text a tip, a bug or something else?
It was a tip AND a bug. So one weird tip! Apologies, the correct text should be displaying now. We are contacting anyone bitten by the bug using the messaging system. Harry
24th November 2025 at 5:36 pm #113885TParticipantThe forum doesn’t always update to show the latest post in a Topic at the forum level e.g. currently in the ‘Thanks’ topic and the last updated at the top of the screen at forum level sometimes has a non-working link to what is described at the latest post, this appears to be when the time of the last post doesn’t change, but the author does change.
